In a recent webinar, Copperleaf\u2019s Solutions Consulting Lead,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rachelgrillot\/\">Rachel Grillot<\/a>, facilitated a discussion between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jay-oliver-9741b81a1\/\">Jay Oliver<\/a>, GM of Grid Strategy and Asset Management Governance at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.duke-energy.com\/home\">Duke Energy<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mjzhou\/\">Joe Zhou<\/a>, Sr. Managing Director of Infrastructure Modernization at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bv.com\/\">Black &amp; Veatch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the webinar, Jay and Joe discuss how value-based decision making can help organizations take advantage of emerging opportunities and solve the challenges of the energy transition.<\/p>\n<h4>Grid Transformation is Accelerating<\/h4>\n<p>The lessons learned from recent climate events in the United States serve as a good reminder that there is still a lot of work to be done\u2014and it needs to be tackled with urgency. While the grid of the future will certainly help mitigate the major threats utility companies face today, such a transformation requires a massive infrastructure overhaul. To truly optimize grid transformation, as Jay stressed, businesses can no longer operate in siloes; integrated system planning needs to be the driving force across an organization. Asset investment planning facilitates this integrated view by enabling stakeholders to work more collaboratively and efficiently across traditional siloes, resulting in more transparent and consistent decision making at the enterprise level.<\/p>\n<p>While integrated system planning certainly increases the complexity of the planning process, it gives utilities more confidence that the whole system is going to deliver reliable and resilient service\u2014and that the right trade-off decisions are being made across the business as a whole to move the grid forward. This process gets even more complex for companies like Duke Energy that operate across multiple jurisdictions\u2014one of several challenges Jay and Joe address during the webinar.<\/p>\n<p>How can you possibly develop a consistent approach and address differences in regulatory requirements from state to state?<\/p>\n<h4>Developing a Grid Investment Framework<\/h4>\n<p>To tackle the challenges of grid investment planning, one common theme emerged: <em><strong>value<\/strong><\/em>. Utilities need a comprehensive and consistent way to value investments across all asset classes\u2014and demonstrate the short- and long-term benefits of those investments to customers, regulators, and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Copperleaf<span style=\"font-size: 15px; line-height: 0; position: relative; vertical-align: baseline; top: -0.5em;\">\u00ae<\/span>\u00a0Value Framework<\/strong> creates this basis for quantitative decision making.
