In large complex organizations, requests to spend money can be wide-ranging which makes it difficult to choose\u00a0the \u201cright\u201d projects to execute among the many diverse and dissimilar requests for funding. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Should I approve the project to increase my production?<\/li>\n<li>Should I replace that aging piece of equipment?<\/li>\n<li>Should I fund the project that will improve reliability?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote testimonial\">\n<p class=\"testimonial--quote\">It&#8217;s not hard to make decisions once you know what your values are.<\/p>\n<p><cite class=\"testimonial--author_info\">Roy E. Disney<br \/>\n<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To make these decisions objectively and confidently, you need to understand how each project contributes to the overall goals of the organization. This is where Value-based Decision Making comes in.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/copperleaf-test.majortom.dev\/solutions\/\">Value-based decision making<\/a> can help identify the optimal set of investments that deliver the greatest \u201cvalue\u201d to the organization, while respecting funding, resource, and timing constraints.<\/strong> Sounds simple, and many people say they do it today, but the truth is, very few do it well.<\/p>\n<p>So what does it truly take to make \u201cvalue-based decisions\u201d? It comes down to understanding how to determine \u201cvalue\u201d which requires four essential steps: Identify, Align, Assess and Optimize.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Identify all the things that deliver value to your organization<\/strong>: \u00a0These are called\u00a0\u201cvalue measures\u201d. Some\u00a0are unique to a specific department, while others can be general benefits across the entire organization. The important thing is that all benefits that contribute value to the organization are included.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Align these measures to a normalized value scale<\/strong>: \u00a0This is where it gets interesting. It\u2019s essential to get agreement across the organization on the relative importance and contribution of each value measure. Without this, there\u2019s no objective way to compare dissimilar investments (like the examples above). This typically requires in-depth discussions and agreement across the company to come to an agreed scale, but is a critical step\u00a0in developing\u00a0any value-based decision model.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Assess every request to spend money using the agreed value measures:<\/strong>\u00a0 This means every request to spend money is assessed using a common \u201cyardstick\u201d to remove any subjectivity from the process. Every investment\u2019s resulting value \u201cscore\u201d is a true representation of how it contributes to the organization\u2019s goals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Optimize to deliver the maximum value:<\/strong>\u00a0 In most cases, requests to spend money outweigh the available funding, labour, and\/or materials. So that means some projects can be funded, while others get deferred. But which ones? Optimization is a mathematical process that\u00a0determines the optimal set of projects that deliver the maximum value while respecting the funding, resource, and timing constraints. Optimization must understand how the value changes over time to make the proper decisions about which projects to defer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Copperleaf has created two white papers to explain this topic in more detail.
