It\u2019s pretty hard to beat using Copperleaf\u2019s optimization to improve the quality of drinking water!<\/p>\n<p>Innovation is one of Anglian Water\u2019s three pillars of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anglianwater.co.uk\/about-us\/smart-business.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">business culture<\/a>. They are focused on embracing challenges and transforming their business into a water company for the 21st century, explaining:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Water encapsulates the challenges and opportunities of our time. It is the key to a thriving economy and a flourishing environment. By raising awareness of water\u2019s importance, by changing how we think about and use it, Anglian Water wants to lead the way towards a sustainable future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One of Anglian Water\u2019s challenges was finding an innovative way to improve their storage point component optimization (a storage point is the last point of treated water before it reaches a customer\u2019s faucet). According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dwi.gov.uk\/about\/annual-report\/2016\/2016-public-Q1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drinking Water Inspectorate (Dec 2016)<\/a> report, the UK\u2019s water industry has been experiencing a fourfold increase in water quality issues at storage points compared to treatment works.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/copperleaf-test.majortom.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/AnglianWater_Innovator_Award_Split-1.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/copperleaf-test.majortom.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/AnglianWater_Innovator_Award_Split-1.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/copperleaf-test.majortom.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/AnglianWater_Innovator_Award_Split-1-300x123.jpg 300w, https:\/\/copperleaf-test.majortom.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/AnglianWater_Innovator_Award_Split-1-768x314.jpg 768w, https:\/\/copperleaf-test.majortom.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/AnglianWater_Innovator_Award_Split-1-1024x419.jpg 1024w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Anglian Water manages an asset stock of over 800 storage points, including water towers, treated water reservoirs, and contact tanks. Historically, the water industry has used a single deterioration model for all storage compartments on a fixed 10-year internal inspection regime. However, since each storage point has multiple components, different installed dates, and numerous deterioration curves, Anglian Water recognized the need to optimize its interventions in order to reduce risk of multiple points of failure. This created a complex mathematical problem of asset deterioration on multiple assets with fixed planned inspection times\u2014requiring a sophisticated solution such as Copperleaf, which could handle all these moving parts.<\/p>\n<p>Enhancements were made to the <a href=\"https:\/\/copperleaf-test.majortom.dev\/blog\/why-do-you-need-a-value-framework\/\">Value Framework<\/a> in the Copperleaf solution to address this challenge. A value model was developed for storage points, which calculates Weibull deterioration curves for each asset, evaluates a variety of replacement and refurbishment interventions, and uses constraints to ensure that optimized interventions are aligned with inspections.<\/p>\n<p>With Copperleaf, Anglian Water has created a new leading approach that has resulted in significant benefits, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Better understanding of whole lifecycle costs<\/strong> and how remaining asset life will <b>delay, reduce or eliminate both capital and operational expenditure<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Improved ability to plan the <b>right level of maintenance and operational <\/b>activity<\/li>\n<li>Enhanced <b>confidence in inspection and testing <\/b>results will enable <b>optimized<\/b><b> site visit <\/b><b>programs<\/b> to be developed<\/li>\n<li>Approach will inform long-term spending requirements, <b>maximizing<\/b><b> benefits over multiple AMP periods<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Best practice approach increases confidence in asset integrity and ability to <b>deliver the appropriate water quality<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Improved assurance <\/b>around asset management of service reservoirs will result in <strong>greater<\/strong> <b>customer and regulator confidence<\/b><\/li>\n<li>New approach will support\u00a0<b>preparation of the PR19\u00a0regulatory submission<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Congratulations to Anglian Water on winning the 2018 Copperleaf Community \u201cInnovator of the Year\u201d Award!
